A rational function is a function is a function of the form f(x) = p(x)/q(x) where p(x) and q(x) are polynomial functions and q(x) is not equal to 0.

Example 1.

The local barangay received a budget of P100000 to provide medical checkups for the children in the barangay. The amount is to be allotted equally among all children in the barangay. Fill in the table below the different allotment amounts for different values for the numbers of children and write an equation representing the relationship of the allotment amount per child (y - variable) versus the total number of children.

Formula will be:

y = 100000/x

where x is equivalent to the number of children.

Rational Equation:

Simplifying the equation as one.

Example:

3/x + 1 = 2/x - 3

Find the LCD: (x + 1)(x - 3)

(x + 1)(x - 3) 3/x + 1 = 2/x - 3 (x + 1)(x - 3)

Cancel out like terms

3x - 9 = 2x + 2

Transpose 2x to the other side, same goes with 9.

3x - 2x = 2 + 9

x = 11
